{"id":901,"date":"2026-09-12T17:56:58","date_gmt":"2026-09-12T16:56:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fevered.earth\/?p=901"},"modified":"2026-09-12T17:57:14","modified_gmt":"2026-09-12T16:57:14","slug":"scene-8-ren-remains-upright","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fevered.earth\/index.php\/2026\/09\/12\/scene-8-ren-remains-upright\/","title":{"rendered":"Scene #8: Ren remains upright"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Part 8 of 43 Individual Scenes from \u2018Rise of Skywalker\u2019<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some ways <em>Rise of Skywalker<\/em> feels like the last round in a fight between two ways of making a new <em>Star Wars<\/em> film: one approach being what you might term a soft reboot, with a new cast of characters taking up the mantle and having a new story that connects to the old one but doesn&#8217;t necessarily continue it &#8211; consider <em>Blade Runner 2049<\/em> or <em>Ghostbusters (2016)<\/em>. The other is the model that became dominant in pop cinema over the period in which the sequel trilogy were released, that of the &#8216;legacy sequel&#8217; where the old characters (and actors) are dragged out for one last go round &#8211; such as <em>Jurassic World: Dominion<\/em> or <em>Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny<\/em>. In <em>Rise of Skywalker<\/em> the story of Rey, Kylo, Poe and Finn is competing for screen time with what you&#8217;d have to generously term a send-off for Luke, Leia and Han (two of whom make appearances despite being fictitiously dead and the other despite being actually dead).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/fevered.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ros-8-1024x576.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-749\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fevered.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ros-8-1024x576.webp 1024w, https:\/\/fevered.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ros-8-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/fevered.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ros-8-768x432.webp 768w, https:\/\/fevered.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ros-8-1536x864.webp 1536w, https:\/\/fevered.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ros-8-2048x1152.webp 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fevered.earth\/index.php\/2026\/09\/08\/scene-6-all-you-want-is-for-me-to-hate\/\">Scene 6<\/a><\/strong> was the throne room fight from <em>Return of the Jedi<\/em>, this is Luke fighting Vader in <em>Empire Strikes Back<\/em>, given all the wow and pizazz of the mid-2010s blockbuster. It&#8217;s got all the elements &#8211; a slow, tense confrontation. A revelation about lineage. A fraught escape (although the creators of <em>Rise of Skywalker<\/em> have left off the ambiguity over whether or not Luke <em>expected<\/em> to be rescued when he threw himself down that shaft). As with the Sheev throne room scene, this is the model for some of <em>Rise of Skywalker<\/em>&#8216;s best assets: taking a sequence from the original trilogy and rendering it anew with the aesthetics of a modern blockbuster. In this way it&#8217;s not dissimilar to something like <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=to2SMng4u1k\">SC 38 Reimagined<\/a><\/em>, or more charitably <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metal_Gear_Solid:_The_Twin_Snakes\">Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taken seriously, this could be a third approach to making new <em>Star Wars<\/em> that isn&#8217;t either of those described above: literally remaking it, treating <em>Star Wars<\/em> as a stock text to reinterpret and reinterpolate, with new actors taking on the old roles. All the old complaining about <em>The Force Awakens<\/em> being too similar to <em>A New Hope<\/em> aside, this could be a creatively interesting way of doing things, and it would be thematically appropriate to the big story of <em>Star Wars<\/em>: making special-er and special-er editions. Go full pop and have Wes Anderson do a few scenes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s perhaps unlikely that Disney will take on this mantle, and maybe a Star Wars film that was an anthology of creative reinterpretations of individual scenes wouldn&#8217;t be all that successful. But while <em>Rise of Skywalker<\/em> is largely nonsensical both as a single narrative or as the climax of a trilogy that includes <em>The Force Awakens<\/em> and <em>The Last Jedi<\/em>, understood as a sort of fan writing &#8211; a studied reinterpretation &#8211; it&#8217;s often enjoyable.
