{"id":928,"date":"2026-09-16T21:28:21","date_gmt":"2026-09-16T20:28:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fevered.earth\/?p=928"},"modified":"2026-09-17T20:14:53","modified_gmt":"2026-09-17T19:14:53","slug":"scene-12-horsin-around","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fevered.earth\/index.php\/2026\/09\/16\/scene-12-horsin-around\/","title":{"rendered":"Scene #12: Horsin&#8217; Around"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Part 12 of 43 Individual Scenes from \u2018Rise of Skywalker\u2019<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The randomiser format serves up a number of most serendipitous moments but this one might be the best, placing the utterly incoherent section of <a href=\"https:\/\/fevered.earth\/index.php\/2026\/09\/15\/scene-11-the-year-is-35-aby-oceans-are-now-battlefields\/\">Scene 11<\/a> with Finn and Jannah where the &#8220;just a feeling&#8221; motif is introduced immediately before this scene which pays it off: Faced with a highly telegraphed Resistance attack on the sole point of interest at ground level on Exegol, the First Order quickly decides to use a different radio tower. At which point Finn serenely announces that the force has told him where the plot needs them to go &#8211; &#8216;just a feeling.&#8217; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/fevered.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ros-12-1024x576.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-756\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fevered.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ros-12-1024x576.webp 1024w, https:\/\/fevered.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ros-12-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/fevered.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ros-12-768x432.webp 768w, https:\/\/fevered.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ros-12-1536x864.webp 1536w, https:\/\/fevered.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ros-12-2048x1152.webp 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We then do the rightly maligned cavalry charge on the upper surface of a Star Destroyer. Aware that I&#8217;m putting my tactical realism hat on, but this theoretically striking visual concept has one or two practical issues:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The utility value of landing people on the hull of a spaceship, even one in atmosphere, seems pretty low. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are Stormtroopers (in a very fetching red) landing on the surface of the ship to meet the Resistance charge within seconds, meaning any element of surprise evaporates.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The horses are primarily used for mobility &#8211; the cavalry charge never smashes a line of Stormtroopers or anything, and the Resistance members all engage at range so it&#8217;s unclear what the advantage of closing that distance on horseback was vs just landing there in the first place.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There&#8217;s nothing in the rulebook that says a Star Destroyer has to remain upright to enable fighting on the upper surface with relation to the ground. In fact, free three-dimensional movement is a defining feature of a spacecraft.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The horses are used because speeders would be &#8216;jammed&#8217;, something we have never seen happen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They brought BB-8 along, who sucks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Rise of Skywalker<\/em> has lots of big-image filmmaking, and to be fair lots of it works. The horses kinda don&#8217;t, but alongside them we do get Rey encountering the Sith throne for the first time, with the reveal shots for the associated Sith hordes and Palpatine&#8217;s collection of strobing light fixtures. It&#8217;s a very cool visual, like something out of an maximalist anime adaptation of <em>Return of the Jedi<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/fevered.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ros-12.1-1024x576.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-754\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fevered.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ros-12.1-1024x576.webp 1024w, https:\/\/fevered.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ros-12.1-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/fevered.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ros-12.1-768x432.webp 768w, https:\/\/fevered.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ros-12.1-1536x864.webp 1536w, https:\/\/fevered.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ros-12.1-2048x1152.webp 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thankfully the <a href=\"https:\/\/fevered.earth\/index.php\/2026\/09\/14\/scene-10-general-whats-our-next-move\/\">&#8220;It&#8217;s not a navy!&#8221;<\/a> guy gets a second line after all: &#8220;They&#8217;ve landed a troop carrier&#8221;.
